In Conversation with Rebecca Chan Weddings and Events about the design elements and details of Jess and Peter’s beautiful modern wedding at wedding venue Toronto Airship37.

In chosing Airship37 for a wedding venue Jess and Peter in many ways committed to having a modern wedding. What were the first steps involved in developing a wedding vision with them?

Jess and Peter knew from the start they wanted an industrial looking space that would be a blank canvas for the wedding vision they had in mind, that offered versatility and flexibility. After countless hours searching for the right venue, they landed on Airship37 for the beautiful white backdrop that lended itself well to bold graphics, and the charming lounge that complimented it well.

What is the story behind that beautiful ceremony banner at the wedding?

Jess is a graphic designer and created all the graphics for the wedding day. It’s always hard to design when it is for yourself! We knew from the start that the colour palette would be black with blush and white, with a mix of geometrics. She incorporated all of the different design elements into the banner as a bold and graphic backdrop to the ceremony and head table. It worked out beautifully and was so unique!

What was your process for working with DeLight Floral + Design in coming up with the floral design for this wedding?

The bride had a specific vision to use geometric vases, and DeLight Floral + Design was able to work with her vision and create beautiful floral arrangements with the geometric vases that the couple found. She understood our mix of femininity and bold graphics, and the end result was stunning.

Bold geometrical shapes and a cohesive graphic colour scheme were integral parts of this wedding design. What were some of the sources of inspiration for including these elements?

They were all things that the bride was drawn to, and, though there was a lot going on, it came together well with a cohesive colour palette and consistency in all the shapes and graphics.

How important was the choice of chairs and tables for the overall look of the wedding?

The chairs and tables provided a modern and clean backdrop to the busy elements that juxtaposed them. The clear chairs lining the ceremony served as a perfect canvas for a continuation of the floral graphic. We decided not to create this for every chair, but just the ones down the aisle for dramatic effect.

What were your thoughts on how the wedding photographers captured this beautiful day ?

They captured the details and the emotions of the day well. The couple looked stunning! You couldn’t ask for more.

The tablescaping was modern and beautiful. What were some of the design elements in its layout that made such a beautiful statement.

We knew we wanted pops of black with the blush and white, and they wanted the table to have a full mix of different elements. We found a slate charger that framed the menu perfectly, giving it a slight masculine feel to contrast the floral on the stationary. Gold flatware was used to give it a pop of luxury. The geometric floral vases sat atop a hand dyed blush table runner that the bride’s mother made. It made for a soft texture juxtaposing the modern feel of the white table and the hard edges of the geometric shapes. The groom spent many nights creating their own geometric cement candle holders that they painted gold, to give another dimension to the table.

In communicating their big day what were some of the priorities of Jess and Peter and what were some of the choices you made that fulfilled these wishes.

Creating a decor look that spoke to their creative, edgey and fun personalities was priority. We spent a lot of our time and budget on sourcing and creating unique elements to create the look. It came together so beautifully, thanks to a lot of the hard work that the couple put in.

What did you like best about the setting of Airship37 and what advice would you give couples chosing a modern industrial venue?

I love that Airship37 is a blank canvas, yet has a lot of character. Like most other warehouse-like venues, it truly looks and feels like a blank canvas so you need to bring in elements to give it more personality and pop.
