Janice Carswell from Rebecca Chan Weddings & Events shares insights from Ashley and Ben’s super fun Modern Airship37 wedding captured by Inna Yasinska Photography.
What brought you to this profession and what inspires you to keep evolving and excelling in your daily work?
After graduating from the Special Event Management program at George Brown College, I interned with the Rebecca Chan team. I continued to plan under the Rebecca Chan umbrella while I worked full time in corporate events. Doing both allowed me to get a taste of the different events and what a career looked like in either. Ultimately I fell in love with the relationships I built with my clients and made the switch to planning weddings full time!
What are some of the key styling principles that you feel made this wedding day design so successful?
Ashley and Ben really let the uniqueness of Airship37 shine through. They didn’t add any draping or excessive decor.

I think the simplicity of the design really showcased the venue in that way. Michelle did an incredible job on their florals as well. The simple greenery is still on trend and I loved the potted orchids, which guests took home at the end of the evening.

Michelle Marie Kelly florals shares some insight from working on this wedding.

When I met with Ashley and Ben to discuss the overall style and aesthetic of their wedding, they said they wanted things to feel bohemian and loose with a heavy emphasis on greenery. So we made sure to use a variety of lush foliage including Italian ruscus, sprengeri fern, and various types of eucalyptus to achieve the look they were going for.

With no real interest in having traditional floral centrepieces, we decided to do tall, lush potted orchids that the guests could take home with them at the end of the night. To dress things up, we added reaching branches and dried botanical accents to add interest and shape, making each and every centrepiece unique and different.

Airship37 was the perfect venue to have this type of hanging greenery installation, as the soaring ceilings really allowed the piece to organically drape and sway in the breeze while still standing out in contrast to the crisp white walls.

How was Airship37 as a wedding venue compatible with the  style choices of Ashley and Ben’s wedding?

One of the things I love about Airship37 is it’s outdoor space. It’s just not something you find very often in downtown Toronto! Their guests had such an enjoyable cocktail hour playing lawn games, and socializing in the warm weather.

It was also such a perfect setting for Ashley and Ben who are two of the sweetest humans I’ve ever met and just so easy-going and laid-back.
What do you feel were some of the best decisions that you made with Ashley and Ben in the planning stages that were key to the success and enjoyment of the wedding day?
Ashley and Ben had a lot of guests coming from out-of-town so they wanted to be able to enjoy as much time with them as possible. For that reason

we organized a very sweet and intimate first look and got some bridal party photos out of the way so they could join in on cocktail hour.
